New Jersey Voter Roll and Mail-In Ballot Statistics Update
As New Jersey gears up for election day, recent updates in voter registration and mail-in ballot activity offer insights into voter engagement across the state. As of October 18, there are 6,709,570 registered voters, reflecting a steady rise from 6,684,699 on October 11. Notably, 576,718 registrations are listed as inactive, down from 581,248, making 6,132,852 active voters eligible to request mail-in ballots.
Mail-in ballot engagement is strong, with 1,096,200 ballots mailed out as of October 27, showing a slight increase from 1,088,879 on October 24. Return rates are also notable, with 611,030 ballots returned by October 27, representing a 55.7% response rate, up from 52.2% on October 24. With the election approaching, the response rate is expected to increase, especially given the interest in the presidential race.
Early Voting Activity
Early voting, which began on October 26 and continues until November 3, has already recorded 247,002 ballots cast, double the early voting turnout of November 2023. This boost indicates high engagement.
Detailed Voter Analysis
- Voter Movements out of NJ: 1,120 registered voters who recently moved out of NJ received a mail in ballot. 73 of these individuals cast a mail-in-ballots. Moverover, an additional 68 Early Voters appear on the NJ Move out list who have also cast an early in-person ballot.
- Voter Movements into NJ: 11,142 recent move in’s to NJ are still registered in both their former state and NJ with 7,236 voting by mail in NJ. An additional 4,820 Early Voters appear on the NJ Move in list who have also cast an early in-person ballot
- Ineligibility: A “Pending -17” list, capturing those ineligible to vote, has grown to 25,615. Two individuals on this list received mail-in ballots but have not cast them.
- Duplicate Registrations: 556 people who have multiple registrations have received a mail-in ballot, with 129 having voted. Nine individuals appear to have cast votes more than once, including through both mail-in and early voting.
- Commercial Address Registrations: 106 people who’s registration indicates that they live at an in-eligible commercial address have received a mail in ballot. Of those, 73 people have voted.
- Deceased Voters: 61 registered voters who appear on the vote by mail are an exact match (first, last, middle name and DOB) to the NJ Death Index. 17 of these individuals have voted.
- Invalid Addresses: A USPS review of mail-in ballot recipients flagged 21,005 as undeliverable. Of these, 7,450 ballots were returned, warranting follow-up after the election.
