Earlier this month, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill disclosed that a software error at the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) between June 2023 and June 2024 improperly registered about 6,600 non-citizens to vote, 400 of whom later cast ballots. While the governor blamed the mishap on vendor error, IDEMIA, the software vendor, pushed back saying there was no such error and they transmitted the data exactly as the individual entered it - and that it was the NJ Board of Elections which failed to validate the names to determine their citizenship status. Sherrill has ordered an investigation and stated that her administration would remove the names from the rolls, notify those affected, and replace the vendor.
